The human heart. Details. System. Circulatory. Artery. Aorta. In humans, the heart is located between the lungs, in the middle compartment of the chest. Fish, in contrast, have two chambers, an atrium and a ventricle, while reptiles have three chambers. The wall of the heart is made up of three layers: epicardium, myocardium, and endocardium. These generate a current that causes contraction of the heart, traveling through the atrioventricular node and along the conduction system of the heart. The heart receives blood low in oxygen from the systemic circulation, which enters the right atrium from the superior and inferiorvenae cavae and passes to the right ventricle. From here it is pumped into the pulmonary circulation, through the lungs where it receives oxygen and gives off carbon dioxide. Map of the Human Heart. Day and night, the muscles of your heart contract and relax to pump blood throughout your body. In the Step Thru below, see the complicated. At True Food Kitchen, we cater to nearly every food preference with a variety of gluten-free, naturally organic, vegetarian and vegan offerings. Oxygenated blood then returns to the left atrium, passes through the left ventricle and is pumped out through the aorta to the systemic circulation. The heart beats at a resting rate close to 7. Exercise temporarily increases the rate, but lowers resting heart rate in the long term, and is good for heart health. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the most common cause of death globally as of 2. Diagnosis of heart disease is often done by the taking of a medical history, listening to the heart- sounds with a stethoscope, ECG, and ultrasound. A double- membraned sac called the pericardium surrounds the heart and attaches to the mediastinum. The upper part of the heart is located at the level of the third costal cartilage. Because the heart is between the lungs, the left lung is smaller than the right lung and has a cardiac notch in its border to accommodate the heart. The atria open into the ventricles via the atrioventricular valves, present in the atrioventricular septum. This distinction is visible also on the surface of the heart as the coronary sulcus. There is an ear- shaped structure in the upper right atrium called the right atrial appendage, or auricle, and another in the upper left atrium, the left atrial appendage. The right atrium and the right ventricle together are sometimes referred to as the right heart. Similarly, the left atrium and the left ventricle together are sometimes referred to as the left heart. The ventricles are separated from each other by the interventricular septum, visible on the surface of the heart as the anterior longitudinal sulcus and the posterior interventricular sulcus. The cardiac skeleton is made of dense connective tissue and this gives structure to the heart. It forms the atrioventricular septum which separates the atria from the ventricles, and the fibrous rings which serve as bases for the four heart valves. The interatrial septum separates the atria and the interventricular septum separates the ventricles. The white arrows show the normal direction of blood flow. One valve lies between each atrium and ventricle, and one valve rests at the exit of each ventricle. Between the right atrium and the right ventricle is the tricuspid valve. The tricuspid valve has three cusps, which connect to chordae tendinae and three papillary muscles named the anterior, posterior, and septal muscles, after their relative positions. The mitral valve lies between the left atrium and left ventricle. It is also known as the bicuspid valve due to its having two cusps, an anterior and a posterior cusp. These cusps are also attached via chordae tendinae to two papillary muscles projecting from the ventricular wall. The papillary muscles extend from the walls of the heart to valves by cartilaginous connections called chordae tendinae. These muscles prevent the valves from falling too far back when they close. As the heart chambers contract, so do the papillary muscles. This creates tension on the chordae tendineae, helping to hold the cusps of the atrioventricular valves in place and preventing them from being blown back into the atria. The pulmonary valve is located at the base of the pulmonary artery. This has three cusps which are not attached to any papillary muscles. When the ventricle relaxes blood flows back into the ventricle from the artery and this flow of blood fills the pocket- like valve, pressing against the cusps which close to seal the valve. The semilunar aortic valve is at the base of the aorta and also is not attached to papillary muscles. This too has three cusps which close with the pressure of the blood flowing back from the aorta. A small amount of blood from the coronary circulation also drains into the right atrium via the coronary sinus, which is immediately above and to the middle of the opening of the inferior vena cava. In addition to these muscular ridges, a band of cardiac muscle, also covered by endocardium, known as the moderator band reinforces the thin walls of the right ventricle and plays a crucial role in cardiac conduction. It arises from the lower part of the interventricular septum and crosses the interior space of the right ventricle to connect with the inferior papillary muscle. The pulmonary trunk branches into the left and right pulmonary arteries that carry the blood to each lung. The pulmonary valve lies between the right heart and the pulmonary trunk. The left atrium has an outpouching called the left atrial appendage. Like the right atrium, the left atrium is lined by pectinate muscles. Like the right ventricle, the left also has trabeculae carneae, but there is no moderator band. The left ventricle pumps blood to the body through the aortic valve and into the aorta. Two small openings above the aortic valve carry blood to the heart itself, the left main coronary artery and the right coronary artery. These are surrounded by a double- membraned sac called the pericardium. The innermost layer of the heart is called the endocardium. It is made up of a lining of simple squamous epithelium, and covers heart chambers and valves. It is continuous with the endothelium of the veins and arteries of the heart, and is joined to the myocardium with a thin layer of connective tissue. The cardiac muscle pattern is elegant and complex, as the muscle cells swirl and spiral around the chambers of the heart, with the outer muscles forming a figure 8 pattern around the atria and around the bases of the great vessels, and inner muscles formining a figure 8 around the two ventricles and proceed toward the apex. This complex swirling pattern allows the heart to pump blood more effectively. The muscle cells make up the bulk (9. These contractile cells are connected by intercalated discs which allow a rapid response to impulses of action potential from the pacemaker cells. The intercalated discs allow the cells to act as a syncytium and enable the contractions that pump blood through the heart and into the major arteries. They are generally much smaller than the contractile cells and have few myofibrils which gives them limited contractibility. Their function is similar in many respects to neurons. It consists of two membranes: an inner serous membrane called the epicardium, and an outer fibrous membrane. Blood vessels and nerves reach the cardiac muscle from the epicardium. This is achieved by the coronary circulation, which includes arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels. Blood flow through the coronary vessels occurs in peaks and troughs relating to the heart muscle's relaxation or contraction. These are the left main coronary artery and the right coronary artery. The left main coronary artery splits shortly after leaving the aorta into two vessels, the left anterior descending and the left circumflex artery. The left anterior descending artery supplies heart tissue and the front, outer side, and the septum of the left ventricle. It does this by branching into smaller arteries – diagonal and septal branches. The left circumflex supplies the back and underneath of the left ventricle. The right coronary artery supplies the right atrium, right ventricle, and lower posterior sections of the left ventricle. The right coronary artery also supplies blood to the atrioventricular node (in about 9. The right coronary artery runs in a groove at the back of the heart and the left anterior descending artery runs in a groove at the front. There is significant variation between people in the anatomy of the arteries that supply the heart The arteries divide at their furtherst reaches into smaller branches that join together at the edges of each arterial distribution. It receives blood from the great cardiac vein (receiving the left atrium and both ventricles), the posterior cardiac vein (draining the back of the left ventricle), the middle cardiac vein (draining the bottom of the left and right ventricles), and small cardiac veins. The anterior cardiac veins drain the front of the right ventricle and drain directly into the right atrium. These networks collect into a main left and a main right trunk, which travel up the groove between the ventricles that exists on the heart's surface, receiving smaller vessels as they travel up. These vessels then travel into the atrioventricular groove, and receive a third vessel which drains the section of the left ventricle sitting on the diaphragm. The left vessel joins with this third vessel, and travels along the pulmonary artery and left atrium, ending in the inferior tracheobronchial node. The right vessel travels along the right atrium and the part of the right ventricle sitting on the diaphragm. It usually then travels in front of the ascending aorta and then ends in a brachiocephalic node. Nerve supply. Autonomic innervation of the heart. The heart receives nerve signals from the vagus nerve and from nerves arising from the sympathetic trunk. These nerves act to influence, but not control, the heart rate. Sympathetic nerves also influence the force of heart contraction. Signals that travel along these nerves arise from two paired cardiovascular centres in the medulla oblongata. Hanukkah - Wikipedia. Purim, as a rabbinically decreed holiday. Hanukkah (HAH- n. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 2. Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. It is also known as the Festival of Lights and the Feast of Dedication. The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a unique candelabrum, the nine- branched menorah (also called a Chanukiah/Hanukiah), one additional light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. The typical menorah consists of eight branches with an additional visually distinct branch. The extra light, with which the others are lit, is called a shamash (Hebrew: . Since the 1. 97. 0s, the worldwide Chabad. Hasidic movement has initiated public menorah lightings in open public places in many countries. On Hanukkah, the Maccabean Jews regained control of Jerusalem and rededicated the Temple. This is a reference to the disagreement between two rabbinical schools of thought — the House of Hillel and the House of Shammai — on the proper order in which to light the Hanukkah flames. Shammai opined that eight candles should be lit on the first night, seven on the second night, and so on down to one on the last night (because the miracle was greatest on the first day). Hillel argued in favor of starting with one candle and lighting an additional one every night, up to eight on the eighth night (because the miracle grew in greatness each day). Jewish law adopted the position of Hillel. It is most commonly transliterated to English as Chanukah or Hanukkah, the former because the sound represented by . Furthermore, the letter . Moreover, the 'kaf' consonant is geminate in classical (but not modern) Hebrew. Adapting the classical Hebrew pronunciation with the geminate and pharyngeal . It has also been spelled as . These books are not part of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) which came from the Palestinian canon; however, they were part of the Alexandrian canon which is also called the Septuagint (sometimes abbreviated LXX). They are not included in the Old Testament books in most Protestant Bibles since most Protestants consider the books apocryphal. Multiple references to Hanukkah are also made in the Mishna (Bikkurim 1: 6, Rosh Ha. Shanah 1: 3, Taanit 2: 1. Megillah 3: 4 and 3: 6, Moed Katan 3: 9, and Bava Kama 6: 6), though specific laws are not described. The miracle of the one- day supply of oil miraculously lasting eight days is first described in the Talmud, committed to writing about 6. Maccabees. A modern- day scholar Reuvein Margolies. They found only a single container that was still sealed by the High Priest, with enough oil to keep the menorah in the Temple lit for a single day. They used this, yet it burned for eight days (the time it took to have new oil pressed and made ready). Rashi, in a note to Shabbat 2. The blessings for Hanukkah lights are discussed in tractate Succah, p. Narrative of Josephus. The Jewish historian Titus Flavius Josephus narrates in his book, Jewish Antiquities XII, how the victorious Judas Maccabeus ordered lavish yearly eight- day festivities after rededicating the Temple in Jerusalem that had been profaned by Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Nay, they were so very glad at the revival of their customs, when, after a long time of intermission, they unexpectedly had regained the freedom of their worship, that they made it a law for their posterity, that they should keep a festival, on account of the restoration of their temple worship, for eight days. And from that time to this we celebrate this festival, and call it Lights. I suppose the reason was because this liberty beyond our hopes appeared to us; and that thence was the name given to that festival. Judas also rebuilt the walls round about the city, and reared towers of great height against the incursions of enemies, and set guards therein. He also fortified the city Bethsura, that it might serve as a citadel against any distresses that might come from our enemies. The eight- day rededication of the temple is described in 1 Maccabees 4: 3. A story similar in character, and obviously older in date, is the one alluded to in 2 Maccabees 1: 1. Nehemiah was due to a miracle which occurred on the 2. Kislev, and which appears to be given as the reason for the selection of the same date for the rededication of the altar by Judah Maccabee. Another source is the Megillat Antiochus. This work (also known as . Recent scholarship dates it to somewhere between the 2nd and 5th Centuries, probably in the 2nd century. Saadia Gaon, who translated it into Arabic in the 9th century, ascribed it to the elders of the School of Shammai and the School of Hillel. And they sought after pure olive oil to light the lamps therewith, but could not find any, except one bowl that was sealed with the signet ring of the High Priest from the days of Samuel the prophet and they knew that it was pure. Therefore, the sons of . In them, it is not permitted to mourn, neither to decree a fast . The Greek term that is used is . Judea then became part of the Seleucid Empire of Syria. King Antiochus III the Great wanting to conciliate his new Jewish subjects guaranteed their right to . However, in 1. 75 BC, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the son of Antiochus III, invaded Judea, at the request of the sons of Tobias. The exiled Tobiads lobbied Antiochus IV Epiphanes to recapture Jerusalem. As Flavius Josephus relates: The king being thereto disposed beforehand, complied with them, and came upon the Jews with a great army, and took their city by force, and slew a great multitude of those that favored Ptolemy, and sent out his soldiers to plunder them without mercy. He also spoiled the temple, and put a stop to the constant practice of offering a daily sacrifice of expiation for three years and six months. Traditional view. When the Second Temple in Jerusalem was looted and services stopped, Judaism was outlawed. In 1. 67 BC, Antiochus ordered an altar to Zeus erected in the Temple. He banned brit milah (circumcision) and ordered pigs to be sacrificed at the altar of the temple. Mattathias (Mattityahu), a Jewish priest, and his five sons Jochanan, Simeon, Eleazar, Jonathan, and Judah led a rebellion against Antiochus. It started with Mattathias killing first, a Jew who wanted to comply with Antiochus's order to sacrifice to Zeus, and then a Greek official who was to enforce the government's behest (1 Mac. Judah became known as Yehuda Ha. Makabi (. By 1. 66 BC Mattathias had died, and Judah took his place as leader. By 1. 65 BC the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy was successful. The Temple was liberated and rededicated. The festival of Hanukkah was instituted to celebrate this event. According to the Talmud, unadulterated and undefiled pure olive oil with the seal of the kohen gadol (high priest) was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was required to burn throughout the night every night. The story goes that one flask was found with only enough oil to burn for one day, yet it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of kosher oil for the menorah. An eight- day festival was declared by the Jewish sages to commemorate this miracle. The version of the story in 1 Maccabees states that an eight- day celebration of songs and sacrifices was proclaimed upon re- dedication of the altar, and makes no specific mention of the miracle of the oil. This may explain why the king, in a total departure from Seleucid practice in all other places and times, banned a traditional religion. This belief has been adopted by most of Orthodox Judaism, in as much as Rabbi Karo's Shulchan Aruch is a main Code of Jewish Law. Timeline. 19. 8 BCE: Armies of the Seleucid King Antiochus III (Antiochus the Great) oust Ptolemy V from Judea and Samaria. BCE: Antiochus IV (Epiphanes) ascends the Seleucid throne. BCE: Under the reign of Antiochus IV, the second Temple is looted, Jews are massacred, and Judaism is outlawed. BCE: Antiochus orders an altar to Zeus erected in the Temple. Mattathias and his five sons John, Simon, Eleazar, Jonathan, and Judah lead a rebellion against Antiochus. Judah becomes known as Judah Maccabee (. The Hasmonean Jewish Kingdom begins; It lasts until 6. BCE1. 65 BCE: The Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy is successful in recapturing the Temple, which is liberated and rededicated (Hanukkah). BCE: Re- establishment of the Second Jewish Commonwealth. The Seleucids recognize Jewish autonomy. The Seleucid kings have a formal overlordship, which the Hasmoneans acknowledged. This inaugurates a period of population growth and religious, cultural and social development. This included the conquest of the areas now covered by Transjordan, Samaria, Galilee, and Idumea (also known as Edom), and the forced conversion of Idumeans to the Jewish religion, including circumcision. The Jews under John Hyrcanus become Seleucid vassals but retain religious autonomy. The Roman general Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great) is dispatched to the area. Jews are massacred in Roman Siege of Jerusalem. The Priests of the Temple are struck down at the Altar. Rome annexes Judea. Battles of the Maccabean Revolt. Arnica the MIRACLE REMEDY « Joe De Livera. Arnica the Miracle Remedy — Case Records. By: Joe De Livera. Sri Lanka. September 1. I am copying below a few interesting cases where I have used Arnica with success. It will be observed that some of the ailments that I have used this remedy for are not listed in the Materia Medicas currently in use and this has attracted a lot of criticism for me for having used it in what has been termed a Non Classical manner which according to some protagonists of the classical school can lead to dangerous consequences. I have the pleasure of recording however that I have never had any reports of any dire consequences following the use of this amazing remedy and all the patients whom I have treated have been grateful that I have helped them in a manner that no one had helped them before. WOUNDS 3. 0c. Arnica 3. GENERAL TONIC IN DAILY USE 3. I have used Arnica 3. I discovered was better than the 6c for the last 1. I believe that I owe to it my sense of wellness. I do not have any ache or pain in my body and I have proved that it is to Arnica that I owe my BP 1. I invite others to use it and to record their response to this remedy. SUBSTITUTE FOR MORPHINE POST MAJOR SURGERY 2. I have used Arnica myself after my Retropubic Prostatectomy and can confidently recommend it for use after any major surgery. When I regained consciousness I noticed the Morphine syringe attached to the IV line and promptly ordered it removed to the consternation of the nursing staff and the surgeon, who warned me that I could even suffer from a major shock due to the pain without the morphine. I stated that I will use my Arnica alone to control the pain and they were very surprised to note that I was relatively free of pain after a few hours. I was able to leave my bed on the third day without any pain medication except for the Arnica I used every 2 hours at first and every 3 hours later. I was discharged on the 5th day and walked to my car. They were all amazed at my extremely quick recovery in 2. I was 7. 3 years old. SURGERY FOR INGUINAL HERNIAI would like to recount my experience yesterday December 4 2. I woke up around 4. AM as my surgeon had instructed me to not eat any food or drink after 5. AM. After breakfast I took 4 pellets Arnica 3. AM when I was wheeled to the theater. The surgery took just over half hour and after I recovered from the general anesthesia and was returned to my room, I took 2 pellets every 2 hours and was surprised that I was able to get out of bed and walk to the toilet within 3 hours post surgery. I was later given the usual antibiotic and noticed another tablet which I was supposed to take and upon inquiry I discovered that it was Diclofenac Sodium 5. Op. I refused to take it and informed the nurse that I was already using my own Homeopathic pain medication, Arnica. It was the total absence of pain that I was impressed with and my surgeon and the nurses were surprised that I did not require the Diclofenac Sodium 5. My surgeon was quite impressed with the pain relief that Arnica gave me and I gave him the balance of the pellets which I had in a little glass vial which he wished to experiment with. I walked to my car about a hundred meters from my room and walked up the stairs at home to my room and did not experience any acute pain at all. It is my hope that members who read this account will also use Arnica in the manner described and experience a very fast recovery from the trauma of post surgical pain. EASES URINE FLOW CAUSED BY BPH 3. Wet Dose. I used Sabal S 6c when I discovered that I was allergic to Hytrin that was prescribed for my BPH. I changed over to Sabal S and Conium but discovered when I used Arnica for a slight wound that it was far superior to the other remedies I used for BPH and I stayed with it from 1. HELPS TO CONTROL INCONTINENCE AFTER TURP 3. It amazes me how this remedy that I have given over 2. TURP (trans urethral resection of the prostate) surgery who were incontinent due to some misadventure on the part of the Uro who had obviously damaged the sphincter muscle in the neck of the bladder. Arnica gave more time between visits to the toilet and in many cases it stabilized the incontinence in a few months. Others use it on a twice daily basis. Always in the water dose. JET LAG 3. 0c. I have used it for many years on every overseas trip. Dosage is 1 teaspoonful taken 3 times on the day before departure. Dry doses to be taken every 3 hours on board and 3 times on the day after arrival. LACK OF MOTOR FUNCTION OF EXTREMITIES IN 8. YEAR OLD 1. M Wet Dose. The patient gradually lost motor control of his hands and feet for about a year and was confined to either his bed or a chair where he was placed by his children. Drugs that were prescribed were not effective. This case was referred to me and my response was an act of faith on my part in giving him Arnica 1. M which I gave him in the water dose. He was completely cured in 2 months. The dosage used was 1 teaspoonful (capful) twice daily. He is now quite mobile and does not use the remedy any more. MENTAL DEGENERATION IN THE AGED 1. MI used Arnica 1. M dose 1 tsp daily in the case of a 7. Alzheimer’s and he showed perceptible improvement in 2 weeks which was continued thereafter. He is now permanently on the Arnica. Dose 1 tsp daily. RETURNED DAMAGED AND DEFACED TOE NAIL TO NORMAL AFTER 1. YEARShttp: //www. Patient used Arnica 3. CHRONIC ACHES AND PAINS 3. I have used it very often when the patient complains of general body pain (not arthritic). It is also useful for chronic back pain due to previous injuries. Sciatica is also helped by a twice daily dose. INSOMNIA 3. 0c. Almost everyone who has taken 1 teaspoonful of this remedy in the water dose prior to sleep has noticed the deep unbroken sleep that they experienced during the night. They wake up quite refreshed with a zing in their steps. ECZEMA 6c. I have used it in over 3. The success rate is better that 8. I recommend that the remedy is continued but those who did not do so after about 3 months do not use it anymore and can be considered permanently cured. The skin condition after this time resembles Vitiligo especially in the chronic cases which had eroded the melanin in the skin which does not regenerate but there is no discomfort or itchiness. I have also applied the water in which a few pellets of Arnica 6c are dissolved in a spoon directly on the lesion which accelerates the healing process. CELLULITIS 3. 0c. I first used this remedy for a 7. She had been to hospital every 6 months on 3 occasions for about a week each time where she was treated with the most powerful antibiotics which left her drained out like a rag. When she came out on the last occasion I gave her Arnica 3. She was also an insomniac and now enjoys deep sleep and for the last 2 years she has not suffered from any reinfection from her Cellulitis. I have also used it for 3 other patients also in the same age group who had been hospitalized at least twice before in each case and they do not have any reinfection after many months or years. The Arnica seems to help by increasing the blood flow in the capillaries under the skin which in turn prevents reinfection. They have however to be on one dose of Arnica permanently. PROMOTES GROWTH OF HAIR 3. I would refer to the many posts on the ABC forum where I have been advocating the use of Arnica 6c for hair growth. The success rate has been better than 8. ANGINA 3. 0c. Many who were using Nitroglycerine on a SOS basis sublingually have been able to replace the drug with Arnica 3. Wet Dose taken twice daily. They have all confirmed that they do not suffer from Angina any more. It is however important that the patient has his Blood Pressure and Lipid Profile checked regularly. CHRONIC HEADACHE 3. I used Arnica in many cases that were not responding to Bryonia 3. INTERNAL HAEMORRHAGE IN A HAEMOPHILIAC 3. I am treating a boy who is now 9 years for the last 6 years who is a Haemophiliac with Arnica 6c for internal bleeding when he suffers from any fall or bump which causes a swelling and pain usually on his joints. The Arnica helps to dissipate the blood and reduces the swelling. I have given him Lachesis 2. Prior to this therapy the boy had to be rushed to hospital for a drip after every fall or cut when he was treated with Hemofil M given IV. PIMPLES, ACNE, BLEPHARITIS, ROSACEA, STYES 3. Hundreds of teenagers have benefited by the use of Arnica 3. I can vouch personally for its efficacy to control styes which I used to get weekly with painful results. BED SORES 3. 0c. Prevents their formation. DARK CIRCLES UNDER EYES 6c. Removes them in a week. NOSE BLEED 2. 00c. The ultimate remedy. RHEUMATISM AND GOUT 3. I believe that it helps to dissipate the swelling of the synovial fluid which causes pain. I treat the Arthritis with Rhus Tox 1. M and Hypericum 2. ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION 6c. I have many patients who have certified that it works like a charm ! TONSILLITIS 3. 0c. Helps to alleviate the swelling and pain. This remedy is only effective as soon as the tonsils show signs of discomfort. Chronic cases have to be treated with an antibiotic. This remedy controls the formation of Tonsiloliths but it has to be taken on a daily basis to be effective in this control. DIABETES 6c. I consider that this is easily the most important discovery I have made and which was made quite accidentally in 2. I gave Arnica 6c to a Doctor who was also an MD who was a Type I Diabetic to help cure a chronic non healing wound. He informed me on the day after he took 2 doses that his Blood Sugar had dropped drastically and refused to use it anymore as he felt that it was some mysterious medicine which he did not wish to experiment with as he was already on Insulin which he injected himself 4 times daily. I then gave this remedy to two Type II Diabetics and discovered that they had the same reaction when their BS dropped considerably similar to the drop caused by Metformin. Robot Wars.
